EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) has announced its All-American selections for 2010, with five Wildcats among the 48 student-athletes honored. Seniors Katrina Dowd (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Danielle Spencer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) and sophomore Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) were named first team All-Americans with sophomore Alexandra Frank (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) being named to the second team and freshman Taylor Thornton (Dallas, Texas/Hockaday School) picking up third team honors. Dowd repeats as a first team selection, also picking up the honor in 2009. She notched 77 goals on the year, the second-highest single-season total in program history, while finishing second in the country with 110 points. Spencer was named to the first team after being selected to the second team in 2009. She established herself as one of the top draw control threats in the country, winning 110 on the year, which is the third-best season performance in NCAA history. Spencer also added 59 goals and 18 assists on the year.
The remaining three Wildcats picked up the first All-American recognitions of their careers. Smith ranked second on the team in both goals (69) and points (102), both of which rank sixth among the single-season accomplishments. She also tied Dowd for the team lead in assists with 33. Frank was one of the Wildcats' top all-around players in 2010, recording 37 points (26G, 11A) with 42 draws and 19 caused turnovers. Thornton was impressive from the opening game of her freshman campaign, leading the team in caused turnovers (29) and ranking second in ground balls (38) while adding five goals and three assists offensively.
With the five All-American selections, Northwestern has now had 17 different players garner 33 honors since 2004. Dowd becomes the fifth Wildcat to be named to the first team twice while Thornton joins former standout Kristen Kjellman as the only Wildcats to be recognized as an All-American following their freshman seasons. Maryland and North Carolina both joined Northwestern with five selections, the most of any school. 2010 IWLCA All-Americans
