EVANSTON, Ill. -- Two Northwestern seniors, attacker Alyssa Leonard and defender Kerri Harrington, were among those named to the All-West Region squads by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA), the organization announced Monday. Leonard, a second-team All-Region choice as a freshman in 2011, earned her first career first-team nod this season, while Harrington is a 2014 second-team selection.
The IWLCA's West Region is composed of institutions from across a broad geographic cross-section of the nation, including schools as far east as Penn State, throughout the Midwest and all members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). It is one of four regions the IWLCA uses to honor its member institutions, along with the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and South Regions.
As her outstanding Northwestern career reaches its stretch run, Leonard has remained as consistent as ever in the draw circle for NU, winning eight more draws in her last nine outings to bring her season total to 153--tied for the third-highest total in NCAA history. Leonard has raised her Division I career record total to 459, good for an average of 5.33 per game over her outstanding career. She also has been a catalyst for the Wildcats attack, scoring at least two goals in seven of her last eight games to assume the team lead in points with 47.
Harrington, meanwhile, has been a vocal leader in the Northwestern defense this season, routinely charged with shutting out the opposition's most potent offensive threat. She did so most recently in NU's NCAA Tournament win over Louisville, keeping 100-point scorer Nikki Boltja to two assists to help the Wildcats advance with an 11-8 victory. Harrington, who also was a first-team All-ALC selection, has 14 caused turnovers this season and 37 for her career.
The senior tandem will do their best to extend their Wildcat careers this weekend when they lead Northwestern into its NCAA quarterfinal showdown with No. 4 Florida, with opening draw set for 1 p.m. CT Saturday in Gainesville.
