EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern, winner of seven of the last eight NCAA championships and each of the last two, was awarded the No. 2 overall seed in the 26-team field for the upcoming 2013 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. The Wildcats, who received the automatic bid to the tournament as champions of the American Lacrosse Conference, will open play at 1 p.m. CT Sunday (May 12) against the winner of a first-round game between Notre Dame and Stanford.
Under the tournament's new 26-team format, Northwestern will host that first-round contest between the Irish and Cardinal at 7 p.m. CT on Friday, May 10. NU recorded regular-season wins over both of its potential opponents, defeating Stanford by a 12-8 margin on April 14 before downing then-No. 9 Notre Dame, 10-8, on April 24 in South Bend.
Two-time defending champion Northwestern enters the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 17-2, including a 12-2 mark against teams that qualified for this year's national tournament. Head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller, whose win over Florida in Sunday's ALC Championship game lifted her career record to 213-32, owns an all-time mark of 32-2 in the NCAA Tournament, giving her the most wins and best career winning percentage in the history of the NCAA women's lacrosse tournament.
