EVANSTON, Ill. -- The American Lacrosse Conference on Tuesday recognized a pair of Wildcats as the league's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their contributions to Northwestern's recent wins over No. 3 North Carolina and No. 19 Johns Hopkins. Senior attacker Shannon Smith earned her second weekly honor of the season while sophomore Kerri Harrington garnered her first career accolade on the defensive end of the field.

Smith totaled five goals and four assists on the weekend, beginning with two goals in NU's 8-7 victory over the Tar Heels, including what proved to be the game-winner with 9:41 remaining. On Sunday, Smith notched three goals and four assists in an exciting 16-12 win over No. 19 Johns Hopkins. In the last week, Smith has moved into the top 15 all-time in Division I women's lacrosse in both points (332) and goals (236).

Issued the challenge of faceguarding the opposition's top scorer against both the Heels and Blue Jays, Harrington did it to perfection to help the 'Cats win by one and four goals, respectively. Against UNC, Harrington made her second career start -- her first since last year's NCAA championship game -- and effectively took UNC's Laura Zimmerman out of the game, holding Zimmerman without a shot or a point and helping coax her into four turnovers. On Sunday, Harrington entered the game for the first time in the second half and helped snuff out the Jays' rally, holding Hopkins' leading scorer, Taylor D'Amore, without a point the rest of the way.

A Northwestern player has now been named ALC Defensive Player of the Week each of the last three weeks.

The undefeated Wildcats (14-0) return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday when they host No. 5 Florida in a pivotal ALC contest. Northwestern Athletics will be hosting a free student tailgate at Lakeside Field prior to the game.
