EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Katrina Dowd (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and freshman Taylor Thornton (Dallas, Texas/Hockaday School) have been honored with American Lacrosse Conference weekly honors after helping Northwestern to a pair of road victories over ranked opponents this past weekend. Dowd was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season while Thornton earns Rookie of the Week honors for her second ALC recognition.
Dowd registered four goals against both sixth-ranked Penn and 18th-ranked Penn State over the weekend while adding three assists against the Nittany Lions. She also tallied seven key draw controls over the weekend to help Northwestern use a pair of second half runs to pull away from both the Quakers and Nittany Lions. Dowd, who became the 11th member of the Northwestern 200-point club against Penn, ranks third nationally in points per game (5.20), fourth in goals per game (3.80) and 15th in draws per game (3.40).
Thornton, who was named the ALC's Defensive Player of the Week on March 31, was named the conference's Rookie of the Week after helping the Wildcat defensive unit hold both Penn and Penn State to lengthy scoring droughts over the weekend. Thornton, who has started every game for Northwestern, also tallied the first goal of the game for the Wildcats in the 13-6 victory over Penn State Sunday. She leads the team in both ground balls (20) and caused turnovers (16) and has contributed offensively with five points on the year.
Five different Wildcats have now garnered eight American Lacrosse Conference weekly honors, which leads the conference. Dowd, Thornton and the rest of the Wildcats now close out the 2010 regular season with five-straight home games, beginning Friday, April 16, when Northwestern hosts ALC opponent Johns Hopkins at 7 p.m.
