EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern landed two players -- senior attacker Alyssa Leonard and junior goalkeeper Bridget Bianco -- on the 2014 Tewaaraton Award Watch List, announced Thursday evening.

For Leonard, it marks the second straight appearance on the early-season watch list for what is traditionally regarded as the Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse, while Bianco earned her first such recognition on the heels of a 2013 season in which she was named an IWLCA third-team All-American.

A total of 50 Division I women's lacrosse players from across the country appear on the initial list, which will be narrowed to a group of 25 candidates in late April. Five Tewaaraton finalists on both the men's and women's sides will be selected prior to the start of NCAA Tournament play in May.

Leonard, NU's career and single-season leader in draw controls, is already off to a torrid start in her senior campaign, racking up 32 draw controls through just three games to increase her career total to 338 -- second-most all-time by a Division I women's lacrosse player. She is tied for second on the squad with five goals thus far from her starting spot on attack.

Bianco is off to an equally strong start in 2014, which began with a career-best 14 saves in a one-goal win against Virginia, enough to earn Bianco Defensive Player of the Week honors in the American Lacrosse Conference. On Tuesday she anchored a Northwestern defensive effort that surrendered only five goals to Marquette, lowering her career goals against average to 7.84 in 32 career games played.

Northwestern has had three players win the coveted Tewaaraton Award a total of five times under head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller: Kristen Kjellman (2006, 2007), Hannah Nielsen (2008, 2009) and Shannon Smith (2011).

The complete Tewaaraton Award watch list and press release are available in PDF format at the top of the page.

Leonard and Bianco will next lead No. 4 Northwestern (3-0) into game action against No. 12 Notre Dame, hosting the Irish at Lake Barrington Field House in Lake Barrington, Ill., on Wednesday, March 5 (8:30 p.m.).
