EVANSTON, Ill. -- One of the most dominant defensive players in the nation throughout her career, Northwestern senior Taylor Thornton on Wednesday earned her first American Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Week honor of the 2013 campaign.

Thornton paced a stellar team defensive effort by Northwestern in a win over conference rival Vanderbilt Sunday, stuffing the stat sheet with five ground balls, four draw controls and a career-high five caused turnovers. It marked just the second game with five or more caused turnovers by a Wildcat in the last three years.

Thornton, who also had a goal and two ground balls against No. 5 North Carolina Friday, moved from seventh to fifth on NU's career caused turnovers list with the effort against Vanderbilt. The reigning Lacrosse Honda Sports Award winner and three-time IWLCA All-American has started all 72 games of her illustrious Wildcats career.

No. 5 Northwestern (3-1) is in preparations for its 2013 home-opener, set for 5 p.m. CT on Wednesday, March 6, against ACC foe Boston College.
