EVANSTON, Ill. -- In a year-long series that debuted last fall, the Big Ten Network is profiling one coach from each of the 12 conference schools whom it considers to be a Big Ten Icon. Kelly Amonte Hiller is Northwestern's representative on the list and is the subject of a 30-minute feature that debuts this Saturday (Feb. 18) at 8:30 p.m. CT on BTN.
Other Big Ten Coaching Icons who have been chronicled in the series thus far include Ohio State's Woody Hayes (football), Iowa's Dan Gable (wrestling) and Purdue's Gene Keady (men's basketball). Amonte Hiller, now in her 11th season at the helm for Northwestern, is the only active coach to be profiled in the series. The program is narrated by legendary college football broadcaster Keith Jackson.
This week's show will explore in depth Amonte Hiller's arrival in Evanston and her transformation of Northwestern women's lacrosse from a club program in 2001 to winner of six of the last seven NCAA championships 10 years later. Since Northwestern became the first lacrosse team -- men's or women's -- from outside the Eastern time zone to win a national championship in 2005, Amonte Hiller has been instrumental in expanding her sport from primarily an East Coast-based game to one played at a high level across the country.
Additionally, the four-time national coach of the year is credited with advancing the women's game with the up-tempo, aggressive style of play she implemented at Northwestern.
The feature includes interviews with family members, colleagues, prominent media members and former players who all help pinpoint the roots of Amonte Hiller's success as a player and coach.
Below is a full list of scheduled air times for Amonte Hiller's episode in the "Big Ten Icons Presented by Discover" series (all times CT). For more information on the show and the list of icons, visit BTN.com.
