WATCH: Wildcats Return to Practice Field

    2013 Northwestern Lacrosse Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Even before heading to their first class of the winter quarter, the defending champion Wildcats reconvened on the practice field for the first time in 2013 Monday morning. Beginning promptly at 8 a.m., Northwestern held a lively 90-minute practice session inside NU's Trienens Hall turf facility to officially kick off the upcoming spring campaign.

Christy Turner Discusses First Day of Practice

Five-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year Kelly Amonte Hiller returns a group of seven seniors and seven total starters to a team that a year ago finished 21-2 and captured the program's seventh NCAA championship in the last eight seasons.

Three-time All-American and 2012 national player of the year Taylor Thornton headlines the list of NU returners; last season, Thornton scored 33 goals in 23 games, tied the NU single-season record for ground balls with 58 and moved into the top 10 all-time at Northwestern in career draw controls (153), caused turnovers (72) and ground balls (134).

Also back to lead the NU attack is senior All-American Erin Fitzgerald -- who needs 49 points to become the 13th player in program history to reach 200 for her career -- and fellow senior Amanda Macaluso (48 career goals, 57 points). The junior class figures to once again be led by draw specialist Alyssa Leonard -- who is within range of becoming NU's career leader in draw controls by season's end -- as well as the dynamic Kara Mupo on the attack and defenders Christy Turner and Kerri Harrington.

Click the embedded video on this page to watch Turner discuss NU's return to the practice field Monday, the benefits of Northwestern's challenging fall season and how the 'Cats stayed in shape over the holidays. At the end of the month, the Wildcats will venture to Turner's hometown of Orlando, Fla., to once again compete in the preseason Champion Challenge hosted by U.S. Lacrosse at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
