HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- Sophomore Danielle Spencer (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) registered a career-high six goals while high school teammate junior Hilary Bowen (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) netted five and added a pair of assists in leading the top-ranked Wildcats to a 22-4 victory over Hofstra. The `Cats improve to 3-0 on the season and extend their winning streak to 24 games.
Similar to the contest against Rutgers, Northwestern came out firing early, scoring six goals on its first seven shots to take a 6-0 lead with just under five minutes gone in the first half. The offensive burst continued through the remainder of the half, as NU took a 14-0 lead into the break with Spencer and Bowen each scoring four times in the first 30 minutes. Junior Hannah Nielsen (Adelaide, Australia/Brighton Secondary) also added a first half hat-trick as the Wildcats out shot the Pride 21-7 in the period.
NU held to its game plan in the second half, keeping Hofstra (2-1) at bay and extending its advantage. Sophomore Katrina Dowd (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) recorded her second career hat-trick with a pair of late goals.
Junior Mary Kate Casey (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) and sophomore Caroline Tesar (Lake Bluff, Ill./Loyola Academy) registered their first goals of the season while freshman Samantha Santulli (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) netted her first goal as a Wildcat.
Junior Morgan Lathrop (Briarcliff, N.Y./The Hackley School) allowed just three goals and recorded five saves to improve to 3-0 on the season. Northwestern also dominated the draw controls, finishing with a 20-7 advantage including seven won by Spencer off the face-off.
Spencer and Bowen highlighted a successful East Coast road swing for NU, as the former high school teammates combined for 18 goals in the pair of wins over Rutgers and Hofstra.
The `Cats will have some time off before hosting Duquesne in the first home game of the 2008 season on Friday, March 8 at Lakeside Field. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
