DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team got the weekend and 2004 season off to a rousing start Friday afternoon, defeating Davidson in an American Lacrosse Conference game 25-6. It marked the third straight year NU won this battle of the ALC's Wildcat teams.

The Wildcats -- who had 12 different women score, including 10 with two or more -- were led by Sarah Albrecht. Albrecht, who led the 'Cats in scoring as a freshman in 2002 but missed last season after a preseason knee injury, scored four goals and dished out five assists.

Northwestern led this game 13-4 at the half, and continued to pour it on in the second stanza.

"I was very pleased with this win and how we played," said head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "This was a good way for us to set the tone for the weekend and the season.

"I was excited by our scoring punch, and we are really looking forward to Sunday," she continued. The Wildcats will meet fourth-ranked Duke Sunday afternoon in Durham, N.C.

Northwestern jumped on top less than a minute into the contest when Lindsey Munday put a free position shot into the cage, and the 'Cats never trailed. The score stood at 4-3 after 10 minutes, but that was as close as Davidson would be for the remainder of the game as NU went on a decisive 9-0 scoring run. Davidson sophomore Abby Mead finally stopped the run with 3:30 remaining in the half, but Northwestern then scored the first four goals of the second half to put the game out of reach.

Freshman Aly Josephs scored three goals in Friday's game, while sophomore Lynda McCandlish and freshman Kristen Kjellman also recorded three-point games with two goals and one assist apiece.
