EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern head coach Emily Fletcher announced today the signings of arguably the best recruiting class in program history. Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman), Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Broomgrove International School) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) have signed National Letters of Intent with the Wildcats. According to the latest Junior Golf Scoreboard ranking, Park is ranked No. 7 nationally, Tangkamolprasert is No. 25 (No. 7 internationally) and Szokol is No. 141.
“I am incredibly excited to have Kaitlin, Suchaya and Elizabeth joining our team,” Fletcher said. “This trio will most certainly leave its mark on our golf program and I can’t wait to have them on campus next fall.”
“I am so excited for coach Fletcher to announce the signing of Kaitlin, Suchaya and Elizabeth,” Northwestern director of golf Pat Goss said. “This will be a continuation of a series of strong recruiting classes by coach Fletcher and assistant coach Beth Miller. With the addition of these three players, our program will continue to do nothing but climb to the elite level of women’s college golf.”
Park is one of the highest-ranked players ever signed by Northwestern as she ranks seventh nationally and first in the state of California in her 2012 class by Junior Golf Scoreboard. She is coming off a blockbuster summer that included two AJGA victories, one AJGA runner-up finish and solid showings at both the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Girl’s Junior Amateur. Most recently, Park was named a 2011 Rolex Junior All-American.
“Kaitlin was a player who impressed us from the very beginning,” Fletcher said. “I am thrilled to finally have this day come when we can officially welcome her into our Wildcat Golf family. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Kaitlin here at NU. ”
Tangkamolprasert will be coming to Evanston via Bangkok, Thailand, where she has been attending the Broomgrove International School. With a strong desire to attend college here in the United States, Tangkamolprasert made the commitment to play competitively in the U.S. each summer. It is here that she caught the eye of both coach Fletcher and coach Miller. Suchaya qualified for the 2011 U.S. Girls Juniors, advancing to match play and is a former Callaway Junior World Champion.
“Suchaya’s enthusiasm and passion for Northwestern is contagious and I know she will have an immediate impact on our program,” Fletcher said. “Her experience and success internationally is impressive and will serve us well. I am beyond excited to have Suchaya joining the Wildcat ranks”
Szokol is ranked second in her 2012 class within the state of Illinois by Junior Golf Scoreboard, posting top 10 results at the Illinois State High School Championships the last two years. Elizabeth’s success extends beyond her play at New Trier High School, with four top 20 finishes, in as many starts, this past summer in AJGA events.
“Elizabeth is a player who has continually improved in all aspects of her game,” Fletcher said. “She has an exemplary work ethic and I know Elizabeth’s best golf is still ahead of her. Watch out for this player!”
Northwestern wrapped up the fall schedule ranked 37th in the Golfweek, Saragan rankings. The Wildcats had three top 10 finishes in the fall, including a third place finish at the season-opening Dale McNamara Invite. The spring schedule begins Feb. 12-14 when the Wildcats visit Rio Mar, P.R., for the Lady Puerto Rico Invite. This year’s spring schedule includes five events before the 2012 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., from April 27-29.
