EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern begins its 2012-13 season next Monday and Tuesday at the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., with a strong stable of returners and one talented newcomer in the lineup.

The first tournament of 2012 is a familiar one for NU; it finished 4th in an 18-team field at the event a year ago. This season boasts a 17-team field competing Sept. 17-18 at the unique par-73, 6,167-yard Championship Golf Course at The University of New Mexico. Monday, Sept. 18, will feature 36 holes of competition before the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Live scoring can be found at Golfstat.com

Four of the Wildcats’ top golfers from 2011-12 are back for head coach Emily Fletcher, led by junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic). Brown compiled a scoring average of 76.06 last year and enters this year with a 76.52 career average -- currently good for third on NU’s career list.

Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) had NU’s second-best scoring average last season at 76.29, but it admittedly was an off year for the accomplished Wildcat. The two-time All-Big Ten selection has two career wins under her belt and currently has the best scoring average in school history at 75.48 entering her final campaign. Despite an up-and-down junior season, Weaver still compiled four top-20 finishes and a victory at the Mountain View Collegiate.

Sophomores Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) and Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) each contributed strong debut seasons last year, combining for five top-20 finishes while starting every event for Northwestern. They round out NU’s experience quartet of returners in 2012-13.

Four newcomers join the Northwestern program this year, led by sophomore transfer Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll). Zhang was an All-BIG EAST and NGCA All-Central Region pick as a freshman in 2010-11 while competing for Notre Dame. She qualified for the 2010 U.S. Women’s Open while a member of the Irish. After sitting out the 2011-12 competitive season, Zhang transferred to Northwestern with sophomore eligibility, spending the summer advancing all the way to the semifinals of the U.S. Women’s Amateur.

In addition to Zhang, freshmen Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman), Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Broomgrove International School) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also join the fold for the Wildcats.
