EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern women’s golf opens up its 2013-14 season this weekend at the 30th annual Mary Fossum Invitational. Played on the par-72, 6,236-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., competition begins with 36 holes on Saturday and concludes with the final 18 on Sunday.

The defending Big Ten champion Wildcats are one of 15 teams in this weekend’s tournament, along with fellow Big Ten foes Indiana, Michigan State and Ohio State. NU enters the season ranked No. 16 in the preseason Golfweek rankings and is the highest-ranked Big Ten team in that poll.

Last year’s Big Ten Coach of the Year, Emily Fletcher, who is now in her fifth season with the Wildcats, will utilize a lineup of one junior, three sophomores and a freshman in the team’s first tournament of the year. A pair of first-team All-Big Ten honorees, junior Hana Lee and sophomore Kaitlin Park (the 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year) return to the course this weekend along with sophomores Suchaya Tangkamolprasert and Elizabeth Szokol. Newcomer Kacie Komoto is part of the Northwestern lineup this weekend while junior Katie Wooliver is scheduled to compete as an individual.

Park, Tangkamolprasert and Komoto all had busy offseasons, and had success in a number of tournaments. Park won the California Women’s Championship in July while Tangkamolprasert returned to her native Thailand and won the Singha Chiangmai Open. Komoto captured titles at the Hawaii State Women’s Match Play and U.S. Women’s Amateur Qualifier in Honolulu to earn a trip to her third U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. The Wildcat freshman advanced to the Round of 32 in match play at the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.

This weekend’s tournament is one of four on the fall schedule for the Wildcats. The following weekend, the team heads to Albuquerque, N.M., for the Dick McGuire Invitational and then returns home to host the Windy City Collegiate Classic, Monday, Sept. 30-Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Northmoor Country Club in Highland Park, Ill.
