EVANSTON, Ill. -- Six Wildcats -- three men and three women -- have been named to the Big Ten's 2012-13 Golf Players to Watch List, announced today by the B1G conference office.
Sophomore Bennett Lavin (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield), senior Nick Losole (Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Notre Dame) and Jack Perry (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) were nominated to the list for the NU men while junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) and sophomore Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) are Northwestern's women's honorees.
Lavin competed in 10 tournaments for Northwestern as a freshman last season. He was NU's top finisher at the fall Prestige at PGA West and picked up a top-20 result at the spring-season NYX Hoosier Invitational, which Northwestern won as a team.
Losole sat out much of the 2011-12 fall season with an injury before returning with a bang in the spring. After an undefeated 3-0-1 record at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Losole collected the first two top-10 finishes of his collegiate career at the Rice Intercollegiate and the Kepler Intercollegiate.
Perry had the second-best stroke average for NU in 2011-12, finishing with a 73.15 behind All-America senior Eric Chun. He had three top-20 finishes and two top-10s last year, including a top-10 at the NCAA Bowling Green Regional. Over the summer, Perry advanced to the semifinals of the California Amateur Championship.
Brown led Northwestern in scoring average during the 2011-12 season with a
76.95 average. Her career mark of 76.52 ranks third all-time in program history. The lone junior on the squad, Brown posted top-10 finishes at the
Dale McNamara Invitational, shooting a career-low 219, and at the Dick
During her freshman campaign, Lee started all 12 events for Northwestern,
posting one top-10 finish and three top-20 placements. Lee led
Northwestern at the 2012 Big Ten Championships and tied for sixth at her
first collegiate event, shooting a season-best 220 at the Dale McNamara
Zhang is a transfer in her first season at Northwestern, but she enters after an incredible run at the 2012 United State Women's Amateur Championship. Zhang advanced all the way to the semifinals of the tournament after taking 17th during the stroke play portion of the competition. Zhang competed as a freshman at Notre Dame during the 2010-11 season, earning All-BIG EAST and NGCA All-Central Region honors that year.
Northwestern's men's team opens the 2012-13 season Sept. 17-18 at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, while the women are at the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., at that same time.
