Golfweek Preseason Rankings: No. 16 Northwestern

    2013-14 Northwestern Women's Golf Schedule

EVANSTON, Ill. – With a young, yet experienced, team returning for the 2013-14 season, Northwestern is tabbed No. 16 in Golfweek’s preseason poll. After capturing the first Big Ten title in program history and a top-15 finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships, head coach Emily Fletcher welcomes back five key contributors from a year ago along with a pair of talented freshmen.

The Golfweek preseason poll is counting down the top 30 women's golf teams heading into the season and NU ranks ahead of Big Ten foes Purdue (No. 18) and Michigan State (No. 22). Golfweek also lists junior Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) as the team’s “Go-to-girl”. The first-team All-Big Ten honoree posted five top-10 finishes a year ago and set a new program record with a team-leading 74.27 stroke average.

Lee is one of five key contributors returning for the 2013-14 season. Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) played in 10 of 12 events a year ago and is the lone senior on this year’s roster.

Three sophomores also are back for the Wildcats after impressive freshmen campaigns. Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./New Trier) was second on the team in scoring average and had four top-10 finishes. Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) came on strong for the Wildcats at the end of last season, leading NU in three of the final four tournaments, including the NCAA East Regional and 2013 NCAA Championships. She has been busy this summer as she recently won the Singha Chiangmai Open in Thailand. Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) played eight events as a freshmen and was a consistent member of the starting lineup during NU’s Big Ten title and run at the NCAA championships.

Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) and Minjia Luo (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) join the Wildcats as freshmen for the 2013-14 season. Komoto recently competed at the 2013 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship while Luo was a 2012 CIF State Champion.
