CLEVELAND – Northwestern sophomore Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) upset the No. 1 seed at the 112th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship Thursday in the round of 16 of match play. Zhang, the No. 17 seed, defeated Hyo-Joo Kim of Korea, 1-up.
Zhang now takes on Su-Hyun Oh from Australia Friday at 11:45 a.m. CT in a quarterfinal match. Fans can follow Zhang via live scoring courtesy of www.usga.org.
Thursday’s round of 16 match was a back-and-forth duel and went the distance to the 18th hole. Zhang went 1-up after making birdie at the first and third holes but Kim won the fourth. Kim, who won medalist honors during the qualifying rounds, then went 1-up with a birdie on hole No. 5 and both golfers matched pars on holes six and seven to maintain Kim’s 1-up lead.
Zhang birdied the eighth to get back to all square, and went 1-up after another birdie on 10. Kim came back though, making an impressive birdie at the par-3, 146-yard 11th hole. The 12th was halved with pars and then Zhang took control for good on the 13th hole, winning the hole with a par.
This 1-up lead was enough as both carded pars on the final five holes of the match. Zhang secured the win when she hit an impressive short iron to five feet at the 18th.
Zhang earned a spot in the match-play competition by tying for 17th in the qualifying rounds. She defeated her first-round opponent, Jaclyn Jansen of Effingham, Ill., 6 and 5, and advanced to the round of 32 defeating Cyna Rodriguez of the Philippines.
