    CLEVELAND – Northwestern sophomore Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) began competition at the 112th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship this week at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Zhang has advanced to the round of 16 in match play and will face top-seeded Hyo-Joo Kim Thursday at noon.

    Zhang shot a 73-71 in the qualifying rounds to tie for 17th and earn a spot in the match play tournament. In the round of 64, Zhang beat Jaclyn Jansen of Effingham, Ill., 6&5 and made five birdies in 13 holes en route to victory. She then advanced to the round of 16, defeating Cyna Rodriguez of the Philippines 4&3 and had five birdies Thursday morning.

    The Golf Channel is providing coverage of the U.S. Women’s Amateur from 2-4 p.m. CT Thursday-Sunday. Quarterfinal matches begin Friday and semifinal matches are Saturday. The match play final takes place Sunday.
