2013 U.S. Women's Amateur Championship
Komoto's First Round Results
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Northwestern incoming freshman Kacie Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) had a strong showing on the opening day of match play at the 113th U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship at The Country Club of Charleston. Seeded 57th, Komoto upset the No. 8 seed, Brooke Mackenzie Henderson (Canada), 4 & 3 to advance to the Round of 32 on Thursday.
Despite trailing early, Komoto came back to win Wednesday’s match. Henderson was 1 up through the first two holes but Komoto carded an even-par 3 on the third hole to put things at all square. Both players scored a 4 to keep things all square through the fourth hole before Komoto started to gain separation.
The incoming Wildcat went 1 up on the fifth hole, 2 up on the eighth hole and 3 up on the 10th hole. Both Komoto and Henderson carded 4’s on each of the next three holes to keep Komoto’s lead at 3 up. She then went 4 up, with a par on the 14th hole, while Henderson bogeyed and the match ended in Komoto’s favor on the 15th hole as both carded 5’s on the 518-yard, par-5 hole.
Komoto’s opponent on Wednesday was the champion of the 2013 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur and competed in the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. Komoto now takes on Doris Chen, a rising junior at USC, at 6:50 a.m. CT on Thursday in the Round of 32. Chen defeated Erynne Lee, 1 up on Wednesday.
Competing in her third U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, Komoto punched her ticket to the 2013 edition of the tournament by winning the Hawaii qualifier. She was a 2012 Hawaii Girls State Champion and Antigua National High School Champion in 2011 while competing for Punahou High School. Komoto, and fellow incoming freshman Minjia Luo, join head coach Emily Fletcher and the Wildcats for the 2013-14 season.
