    EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern begins competition at the 2013 NCAA East Regional this week, playing at the Auburn University Golf Club in Auburn, Ala., from Thursday, May 9-Saturday, May 11. The Wildcats are the No. 10 seed in the 24-team field and will tee off the first round of competition from the 10th hole at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, along with No. 11 seed Tennessee and No. 12 seed Kentucky.
     
    After claiming a share of the 2013 Big Ten title, the first in Northwestern women’s golf history, the ’Cats are one of 11 conference champions competing in the East regional. NU is making its 11th NCAA regional appearance in school history, including each of the last four seasons under 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year, Emily Fletcher.

    With the 5-count-4 format, the Wildcats will send a group made up of one senior, one sophomore and a trio of freshmen to Auburn. Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) will play in her fourth and final NCAA regional while sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) is making her second NCAA appearance. As a 2013 First-Team All-Big Ten honoree, Lee’s 74.00 scoring average leads the squad as do her five top-10 finishes and seven top-20 showings this year.
     
    The NU group of freshmen competing this week includes Big Ten Freshman of the Year Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman), Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier). All three had solid showings for the Wildcats at the 2013 Big Ten Championships as Park led the NU squad, finishing in sixth, Szokol posted her first top-10 finish, tying for ninth and Tangkamolprasert shot a career-low score of 226 to tie for 16th.
     
    The Wildcats will face a competitive field at the NCAA East Regional as seven teams are ranked in the top 20 in the latest Golfstat.com rankings. Northwestern comes in at No. 29 in the latest poll but is ranked No. 23 in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and Golfworld Coaches' Poll.
     
    The top eight teams and two individuals from each regional will advance to the 2013 NCAA Championships, played May 21-24 at the Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
