NU Big Ten Championship Notes
EVANSTON, Ill. – Six Wildcats will compete at the 2013 Big Ten Championships this weekend at The Donald Ross Course in French Lick, Ind. The 12-team conference tournament begins at 8 a.m. CT Friday, April 26 and runs through Sunday, April 28 with 18 holes contested each day.
This is the second year the Big Ten Championships have been played at a neutral site as last year’s tournament also took the conference to French Lick, Ind. Golfweek Magazine ranked the Donald Ross Course No. 2 among the "Best Courses You Can Play" rankings in the state of Indiana. The Ross course, along with the highly acclaimed Pete Dye course, which is the site for the men’s tournament, has hosted a number of elite players and golf events.
Head coach Emily Fletcher will use a lineup featuring two upperclassmen, a sophomore and three freshmen playing in their first postseason tournament. Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows), junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) along with freshmen Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman), Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) will compete this weekend.
No. 29 Northwestern is coming off a third-place finish at the 2013 Lady Buckeye Invitational, an event that featured nine Big Ten squads last weekend in Columbus, Ohio. NU’s third-place finish, tied for the best finish of the season as Tangkamolprasert led the six Wildcats with her ninth-place finish. It was her first top-10 finish of the year and she was one of four ’Cats to place inside the top-20.
Last year, Northwestern finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships with then-freshman Hana Lee leading the way. She finished in a tie for 18th in her first conference tournament, posting a 12-over 228 (75-75-78).
For those unable to make it to French Lick, Ind., be sure to tune into the Big Ten Network on Wednesday, May 8 at 5 p.m. CT to watch the tape-delay broadcast of the tournament.
