EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will wrap up the 2013-14 regular season on Monday, April 14-Tuesday, April 15 at the inaugural Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif. The 15-team tournament features a number of schools from the west coast as Colorado and Oregon serve as co-hosts.
The collegiate golfers will have a fantastic experience at the Silverado Showdown, where they will be playing on the North Course, named the No. 16 golf course in California on Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play” list and No. 27 amongst America’s Top 50 Courses for Women.
The course, which features dozens of water crossings, elevation changes and routing through historic oak trees, was recently redesigned by Johnny Miller, an outstanding former PGA TOUR professional, World Golf Hall of Fame Member and current lead golf analyst for NBC Sports.
Next fall, (Oct. 7-13), the North Course will host the first event of the PGA TOUR schedule, the Frys.com Open.
The 15-team field at the Silverado Showdown features nine teams ranked in the Golfstat top 50, including No. 1 USC, No. 9 Arizona and No. 11 Washington. The Wildcats are the fourth-highest ranked team in the field, entering the tournament at No. 20. Additionally, there are seven individuals in the field that rank in Golfstat’s top 25.
Northwestern shook up its schedule last time out at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, playing stroke play and match play at the historic event. The Wildcats had a record-breaking round of stroke play to lead the 16-team field with an 11-under 277. That score set a program and tournament record for an individual round. Junior Hana Lee also matched a program record en route to co-medalist honors, carding a 6-under 66. She was honored as Big Ten Golfer of the Week on April 9 for her efforts at the Liz Murphey.
NU then had its first taste of match play and faced three tough opponents, taking on NC State, Auburn and Denver. The Wildcats ended the tournament with a commanding 3-1 win over Denver.
Head coach Emily Fletcher will utilize the lineup of junior Hana Lee, sophomores Kaitlin Park, Elizabeth Szokol and Suchaya Tangkamolprasert along with freshman Kacie Komoto at the Silverado Showdown. This group helped the Wildcats set the program record for an individual round at the Liz Murphey as all five players finished in the top 40, with four placing in the top 10 during stroke play.
The Silverado Showdown is the final event of the regular season as the postseason begins April 25 at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. The Wildcats will look to defend their conference crown at the tournament that runs through Sunday, April 27 in French Lick, Ind.
