EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) has been named the Big Ten’s Golfer of the Week, the conference announced today. Weaver tied for first at the Mountain View Collegiate, played in her home state of Arizona (Tucson) from March 23-24.
“It’s really exciting and an honor to be named Big Ten Golfer of the Week,” Weaver said. “I worked really hard over the winter so it’s great to see that my hard work paid off. It was nice to be able to play close to home at the Mountain View Collegiate and have my family around to see the results of all the effort I’ve put in so far this season.”
It is the first weekly honor for Weaver and second for an NU golfer this season as senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) was named the conference’s golfer of the week following her performance at the Dick McGuire Invitational (Sept. 25-26).
Weaver had the best 54-hole score of any NU golfer this season, finishing with a 7-under 209, one stroke off her program-record tally of 208 at the 2011 Lady Northern Invitational. She posted two rounds of 3-under 69, another NU season-low, and also was under-par, shooting a 1-under 71 in round two.
This was the second first-place finish for Weaver in her Wildcat career, her first since winning the Lady Northern.
This year, Weaver once again leads the team in scoring average at 75.14 and continues to maintain the NU program record for career scoring average at 75.12.
Northwestern, which is currently ranked No. 43 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, is back in action April 6-8 at the Bryan National Collegiate, played in Greensboro, N.C.
