EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern will make history when it heads to California this weekend to host its first tournament outside the Chicagoland area.

The 2006 Northwestern Invitational will be held at the Gary Player Signature Course at the Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on April 3 and 4 with a practice round April 2. The tournament features a competitive assortment of teams. Eight of the 14 teams, including Northwestern, are ranked in Golfweek's top 50 (Sagarin index).

Participants include No. 23 Kent State, No. 25 SMU, No. 27 Michigan State, No. 28 Baylor, No. 32 UC Irvine, No. 35 TCU, No. 43 Northwestern and No. 49 Penn State, as well as Colorado, Iowa State, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Texas Tech and Western Michigan.

In addition, these teams boast a number of nationally ranked players: No. 47 Selanee´ Henderson from UC Irvine, No. 60 Tara Delaney, No. 78 Kira Meixner and No. 81 Becky Woo from Kent State, No. 77 Josefin Svenningsson from Baylor, No. 57 Sara Brown from Michigan State, No. 74 Lacey Jones and No. 95 Kristina Rothengatte from SMU, No. 75 Amy Schmucker from Michigan and No. 76 Camille Blackerby from TCU.

"This tournament field is very strong," said Kathy Williams, Northwestern assistant coach and tournament director. "The leader board could change every day and that is what you want in a collegiate event to make it exciting for your golf fans. It is anyone's tournament to win."

The 14-team competition will consist of 54 holes. 36 will be played on Monday and 18 will be played on Tuesday. Golf Digest ranks the Westin Mission Hills Resort as one of the top 75 golf resorts in the United States.

For Northwestern's women's golf program, the event represents a chance to be a tournament ambassador.

"Hosting this event in Palm Springs gives us great pride to showcase top women's collegiate golf," Williams said. "The golf fans in the desert are hungry for this event because we will be holding it right after the LPGA Kraft Nabisco Championship. It is a great time to have a collegiate event."

With a talented and competitive field, Northwestern hopes to attract national attention with the invitational.

"This will be a prestigious tournament that will be noticed in the golf world," she said.
