2012 Spring Season Preview (Video)
EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern tees off the 2012 spring schedule Sunday, Feb. 12 at the 10th Annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic, played on the River Course, designed by Greg Norman, at the Rio Mar Beach Resort in Rio Grande, P.R. The tournament runs through Tuesday, Feb. 14 and the ’Cats will get a good early-season test as 12 of the 15 teams, including No. 37 Northwestern, are ranked in the top 50 by the GolfWeek/Sagarin Rankings.
The 54-hole tournament begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. local time Sunday. Day two continues with another 8 a.m. shotgun start and then the final round begins with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. local time Tuesday.
This is Northwestern’s first tournament since closing out the fall campaign at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., in late October. The ’Cats had a successful start to the season with three top-10 finishes in their four events. NU started the year strong, tying for third at the Dale McNamara Invitational, finished fourth at the Dick McGuire Invitational and then tied for sixth while hosting the Windy City Collegiate Championships.
Northwestern used a consistent lineup in the fall with one senior, one junior, one sophomore and two true freshmen. Senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows), sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) along with freshmen Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) and Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif./Poway) played in all four fall events for Northwestern.
Brown had an outstanding fall season, leading Northwestern with a 74.75 scoring average and two top-10 finishes. Her best finish came in the season-opening Dale McNamara Invite where she tied for fourth with a 3-over 219, tying her career-low 54-hole score.
Veteran leaders Lederhausen and Weaver also had a successful start to the 2011-12 season. Lederhausen also tied her low 54-hole score at the Dick McGuire Invitational, shooting an even-par 219 to tie for fourth, earning Big Ten Golfer of the Week honors for the first time in her career. Weaver finished the fall second on the team in scoring average at 75.50 and remains on top of the NU top career stroke average list with an average of 75.16.
Freshmen Lee and Mai have fit right in with this year’s Wildcat squad and also found success in the fall. In her first collegiate event, Lee shot a 4-over 220 at the Dale McNamara Invitational to tie for sixth. Mai also started the season strong, tying for 15th at the same tournament, also her first collegiate event.
Northwestern competed at the 2011 Lady Puerto Rico and tied for sixth out of 18 teams. Weaver led the squad, shooting a 2-over 218 to tie for fourth. She saved her best round for last, recording a 1-under 71. Then-No. 1 Alabama took last year’s team title for the second-straight year, but the Crimson Tide are not part of this year’s 15-team field.
