This is the first tournament for the ’Cats since Oct. 28 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. The tournament was cut short after the first round due to Hurricane Sandy with the ’Cats taking 10th of 17 teams at the tournament. The fall season was a successful one for Northwestern with three top-10 finishes in four events. NU finished fifth at the Dick McGuire Invitational, third at the Windy City Collegiate Classic and fourth at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship.
Northwestern will use a combination of youth and experience in its lineup as one senior, one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen will travel to Puerto Rico. Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows), junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic), sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson), and freshman Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) played in all four events for Northwestern in the fall. Freshmen Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) will join the group this weekend.
Lee had a great start to her sophomore year with a team-low scoring average of 73.10 and three top-10 finishes in her four starts during the fall. Her best finish came at the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Classic where she tied for fourth place.
NU’s record-holder for career scoring average, senior Lauren Weaver, returns for her final season. Her third place finish at the Dick McGuire Invitational was the best finish this fall by a Northwestern golfer and she finished the fall with a scoring average of 75.50.
Kaitlin Park has found her way into the rotation quickly as the freshman had immediate success this fall. She started off her college career with a tied for 25th at the Dick McGuire Invitational. At the Mercedes Benz Collegiate, she posted the low round of the fall for the ’Cats in the final round with a 67 leaving her in sixth place at 1-under par for the tournament.
Northwestern competed in the 2012 Lady Puerto Rico Tournament finishing fifth out of 15 teams in the field. This year’s team title is up for grabs as the top 3 teams from 2012, LSU, Georgia and Oklahoma State, are not scheduled to compete this weekend in Puerto Rico.
