    KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
    – Northwestern had the best round of the tournament out of the entire 16-team field Sunday during the final 18 holes of the Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. With three of NU’s five starters shooting at or under par and one other posting a 1-over 73, the Wildcats had their best round of the season, scoring a 4-under 284. That was the top score of the tournament for any team by three strokes as Penn State shot a 1-under 287 on Sunday.
After 54 holes, three Wildcat players found themselves in the top 20, including two in the top 10, and Northwestern finished fourth for its third top-five finish in as many events. NU climbed up the leaderboard each round, finishing day one in a tie for sixth, then moved to fifth after Saturday’s round and took fourth at 10-over 874, just two strokes behind third-place Purdue (8-over 872) and three strokes behind second-place Tennessee (7-over 871). Penn State was seven strokes ahead of NU to win the tournament at 3-over 867.
In just her third collegiate event, freshman Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) found herself one stroke off NU’s program record for 18 holes. Park posted the best individual round out of the 89 golfers at the tournament, finishing Sunday’s round at 5-under 67. Her score was one off of current NU senior Lauren Weaver’s (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) NU record of 66 that was recorded during the 2010 season.
Beginning the final round on the first hole, Park was even through the first four holes with a birdie on three and bogey on four. She then found herself at 3-under for the front nine with three straight birdies on five, six and seven and finished with two pars. She continued her strong play on the back nine with two pars, a birdie on 12, another par on 13 and her sixth birdie of the round on No. 14 put her at 5-under where she remained after four more pars.
Park’s stellar score in the third round helped her vault from a tie for 21st into sixth place for the first top-10 finish of her young Wildcat career. She finished 1-under for the tournament (74-74-67=215).
Park was the second-highest finisher for Northwestern as sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) had her best tournament in her two years with the Wildcats. She finished in a tie for fourth, the best placement of her career, and set a new career low, scoring a 2-under 214. Her previous career low was 219, which she scored in both of NU’s first two events to start the season.
Lee never went more than 1-over for the tournament, scoring a career-best 3-under 69 on Friday, went 1-over on Saturday and finished the final 18 holes at an even 72. The Hacienda Heights, Calif., native has finished in the top 10 in all three tournaments so far this season.
Sophomore Nicole Zhang (Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Carroll) was the third Wildcat to finish in the top 20 as she tied for 15th. After scoring a 1-under 71 on Saturday, Zhang finished the final round at an even 72 to go 3-over 219 for the tournament.
Junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) had her best round on Sunday, scoring a 1-over 73. After back-to-back bogeys to start the final round, she rebounded with three-straight pars, birdies on holes No. 6 and 7 and two more pars to finish the front nine even. She then added three more birdies on the back nine and had four bogeys to finish 1-over. Brown posted a 15-over 231 to tie for 52nd.
Weaver wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 60th at 17-over 233 (75-78-80) while senior Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph’s) competed as an individual and posted a 26-over 242 (84-79-79) to tie for 75th.
Northwestern has next weekend off of competition and then plays its final tournament of the fall season Oct. 26-28 at the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C.
