GLENCOE, Ill. -- Sophomore Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) had a day for the record books at the 2010 Lady Northern Invitational. Weaver shot a 6-under 66 in round one, marking the lowest single round in Northwestern history, and finished the opening 36 holes tied atop the leaderboard with a 5-under 139, pacing the Wildcats to a third-place standing after two rounds.
"As a team, we made a lot of birdies today, which was huge for us," said head coach Emily Fletcher. "It was a goal heading into this tournament to take some of those pars we had been making and convert them into birdies, and it helped lead us to a good showing. We are extremely proud of Lauren and her play today. She was extremely patient with her shots from the opening hole and has placed herself in a great position after two rounds."
Weaver's 6-under 66 is one stroke better than the 5-under 67 shot by Ina Kim at the 2005 Mountain View Collegiate and two shots better than her previous best of 4-under 68 at last season's Dick McGuire Invitational. She notched four birdies on the front nine, then added three more on the back to negate a bogey on the 10th hole. She remained consistent in round two, notching nine-straight pars before recording three birdies over the final nine holes. Weaver heads into Tuesday's final round tied with Indiana's Lindsay Gahm, one shot better than Purdue's Laura Gonzalez.
Freshman teammate Devon Brown
(Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) also was a key contributor to Northwestern's success, posting a career-best 1-under 71 in round two to sit at even-par 144 through 36 holes. Brown remains in the hunt for the second top-five finish of her young career, entering the final 18 holes tied for seventh overall just one stroke back of both Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister and Minnesota's Teresa Puga for fifth-place.
The performances of Weaver and Brown sparked the Wildcats to a 1-over 289 in round one, Northwestern's lowest round of the season and tied for the third-lowest single-round total in program history. Fletcher's squad then posted a 9-over 297 in the afternoon session for its second sub-300 round of the season and solidify its third-place standing. The Wildcats hold a six-stroke advantage over fourth-place Texas Tech (16-over, 592) and enter Tuesday six shots back of second-place Ohio State (4-over, 580).
Junior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) shot a 6-over 150 in rounds one and two and is third among the Northwestern participants at the Lady Northern. Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) and Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) rounded out the five Wildcat competitors, compiling a 9-over 153 and a 19-over 163 respectively.
After a shotgun start in rounds one and two, Tuesday's final round will feature a standard staggered start from holes one and 10, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Northwestern will tee off among the final groups from hole one, starting at 8:42 a.m. with Weaver teeing off among the final threesome at 9:09 a.m. Admission to the Lady Northern is free and Northwestern fans are welcome to head out to Lake Shore Country Club to cheer on the Wildcats. Live scoring of the final 18 holes will also be available at Golfstat.com.
