HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. -- The Wildcats played the final round of the 2013 Windy City Collegiate Classic Tuesday at the Northmoor Country Club (par-71, 6,108 yards) in Highland Park, Ill. Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert led Northwestern during the final 18 holes to vault into the top 10 in the individual standings as the Wildcats placed fifth in the competitive 15-team field. All five NU starters finished inside the top 30, with four in the top 25.
Northwestern scored a 12-over 296 on Tuesday to finish at 15-over 867. The Wildcats held off an Iowa State squad that was surging during the final round and beat the Cyclones by a stroke as they finished in sixth (16-over 868). The defending NCAA Champions, Southern California, won the tournament at 1-over 853, two strokes ahead of runner-up Oklahoma State. Arizona and Stanford tied for third at 5-over 857. USC (No. 2), Oklahoma State (No. 5), Arizona (No. 10) and Stanford (No. 15) were four of the nine teams in the Windy City field that were ranked inside the top-25 according to Golfstat.com.
Tangkamolprasert recorded a 1-over 72 during Tuesday's final round with two birdies to counter three bogeys. She began on the first hole and was nearly perfect on the front nine with eight pars and a bogey on hole No. 9. She wrapped up the round with birdies on 13 and 18 to tie for ninth at 3-over 216 for her first top-10 finish of the year and second of her young Wildcat career.
Sophomore Kaitlin Park finished inside the top 20 as she was two strokes behind Tangkamolprasert, finishing with a 5-over 218 for the tournament to tie for 18th. Junior Hana Lee and sophomore Elizabeth Szokol each finished in a tie for 22nd at 6-over 219. Lee had the second best round of the day for Northwestern, posting a 2-over 73. She finished the back nine strong with birdies on the 11th and 13th holes and had five-straight pars to end the round.
Freshman Kacie Komoto rounded out the NU starting five and she finished inside the top 30, tying for 29th at 8-over 221. She also finished the round strong with par-birdie-par-birdie-par on holes 14-18.
Head coach Emily Fletcher utilized her whole lineup at the Northwestern-hosted event as three Wildcats competed as individuals. Senior Devon Brown played in her fourth and final Windy City Collegiate Classic and finished 46th. Freshman Minjia Luo and junior Katie Wooliver rounded out the NU competitors in a tie for 68th.
Northwestern now has a break in its fall schedule until traveling to the Stanford Intercollegiate Oct. 25-27. That is the final event of the fall schedule for the Wildcats.
