ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern's women's golf team came out firing Sunday, but fell just short of the Wolverine Invitational team title after shooting a final-round 301.
The Wildcats finished the second round early Sunday morning (Saturday's second round was suspended due to rain) with a team total of 14-over 298 and found themselves in third place, 11 shots behind tournament-leading Ohio State and nine behind Michigan. The final-round 301 pushed the 'Cats into the thick of the battle, but Michigan edged the Buckeyes by two and the 'Cats (311-298-301=910) by four to earn the team title.
Michigan State, which won the Wildcats' last event (the Lady Northern), and Indiana tied for fourth, nine shots behind the charging 'Cats.
Senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) completed her second round -- an even-par 71 -- and then maintained her fourth-place standing by shooting a final-round 75 to finish at 11-over 224. Kim's 54 holes (78-71-75=224) included seven birdies, which tied her for the third highest birdie total in the Wolverine Invitational.
Right behind Kim was Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango), who finished off her second-round 74 with a birdie, and then matched Kim's final-round 75 to vault up into the top-10 and finish in a tie for seventh at 13-over 226 (77-74-75=226).
Junior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) made it three Wildcats in the top-10, as she earned her second top-10 in as many events. Johnston fired a final-round 76 to finish tied with Alvarez for seventh at 13-over 226 (77-73-76=226).
The other two Wildcats had solid Sundays as well. Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) equaled Kim and Alvarez's final-round 75's, moving herself into the top-30 and finishing in a tie for 28th at 21-over 234 (79-80-75=234).
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) finished with a final-round 76, as all five Wildcats counting toward the team score shot no worse than 76 to help Northwestern make its final-round charge.
Sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy) participated in the Wolverine Invitational as an individual. Hong finished the 54-hole invitational in 28th place, shooting a 20-over 233 (77-75-81=233).
Northwestern returns to action next weekend (Oct. 6-8) as it takes part in the Lady Paladin in Greenville, S.C.
