HIGHLAND PARK, Ill. -- It was a picture-perfect fall day at the Northmoor Country Club (par-71, 6,108 yards) with temperatures in the mid 70’s as the Wildcats hosted a 15-team field during the first day of the 2013 Windy City Collegiate Classic. After 36 holes of play, Northwestern sits in fifth place in a highly-competitive field that includes nine teams ranked in the top 25 of the latest Golfstat.com poll.
Sophomore Kaitlin Park led Northwestern during the first day of competition as she is in a tie for eighth. She had a strong start to the day, carding a 3-under 68 during the first round. Beginning on the first hole, Park had a bogey-free first round with three birdies. She finished the front nine at 1-under and tacked on two more birdies on the 15th and 16th holes to finish the round. The defending Big Ten Freshman of the Year then posted a 3-over 74 in the second round to finish at an even 142 through 36.
Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert began the day with a 3-over 74, scoring three birdies in the round and improved her score by four strokes in the second round to land a 1-under 70. She began the second round on the first hole and was 2-under through the front nine with birdies on two and nine. She then finished the round with a near perfect card that included eight pars and a bogey on the back nine. Tangkamolprasert is currently tied for 20th at 2-over 144.
After posting a 1-over 72 in each round, sophomore Elizabeth Szokol has the same score as Tangkamolprasert at 2-over 144. She finished with four birdies on the day and sits in a tie for 20th.
Freshman Kacie Komoto began Monday with a 3-over 74 and improved her score by three strokes in the second round, scoring an even 71. She was 1-over upon conclusion of the front nine during the second round and after a double-bogey on the 10th hole, Komoto finished nicely with five pars and birdies on 15, 17 and 18 to wrap up the back nine at 1-under. She is currently tied for 25th heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Junior Hana Lee rounded out the group of NU starters as she is a tied for 29th at 4-over 146. She scored a 1-under 70 in the first round thanks to three birdies to counter two bogeys.
A trio of Wildcats competed as individuals as senior Devon Brown leads the group at in a tie for 35th at 5-over 147 (73-74). Freshman Minjia Luo and junior Katie Wooliver each finished the day at 17-over 159.
As a team, Northwestern is in fifth place at 3-over 571 (284-287). NU is four strokes behind fourth-place Stanford (1-under 567) and has a seven-stroke lead on sixth-place Iowa State (+10). It’s a tight race at the top as Southern California (-6), Oklahoma State (-5) and Arizona (-4) occupy the top three spots, respectively.
The third and final round of the 2013 Windy City Collegiate Classic begins Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. CT with tee times off the first and 10th holes.
