    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Northwestern had a strong start to the 2012-13 season, finishing fifth out of 17 teams at the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Tuesday in Albuquerque, N.M. Played on the par-73, 6,192-yard UNM Championship Course, the Wildcats had two returnees finish in the top 10 including senior Lauren Weaver's third-place finish. Sophomore Hana Lee finished just two strokes behind Weaver, tying for sixth, for her second career top-10 finish and a career-low score of 219.

    Weaver finished the tournament with an even-73 in the final 18 holes to post the 11th top-10 finish of her career. She had five birdies on Tuesday, including back-to-back on holes 14 and 15. Her 54-hole score of 217 (2-under) was one stroke off second-place finisher Rachel Rohanna of Ohio State (3-under 216) while Colorado's Jennifer Coleman led the pack at 11-under 208.

    Lee had her best round of the tournament Tuesday, scoring at 2-under 71 to finish at an even 219, which is one stroke off her previous career best of 220 set at the Dale McNamara Invitational last year. She entered the final round in a tie for 17th, but vaulted into sixth place thanks to an eagle on the par-5, 479-yard first hole and birdies on the 12th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes. Lee posted a 76 and 72 in the first two rounds, respectively.

    NU newcomer, freshman Kaitlin Park played as an individual and tied for 25th. She finished with a 5-over 224 after scoring a 3-over 76 Tuesday. Fellow newcomer, sophomore Nicole Zhang, made her Wildcat debut tying for 32nd. Zhang shaved two strokes off her second-round score, posting a 3-over 76 Tuesday. She finished the tournament with a 7-over 226 (72-78-76).



    Junior Devon Brown and freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert rounded out the NU starters and both tied for 55th, scoring a 14-over 233. Both Wildcats shot a 6-over 79 in the final round.

    As a team, Northwestern had a 7-over 299 in the final 18 holes for a 54-hole score of 17-over 893. The Wildcats were six strokes off tying for second as UC Davis, UNLV and Ohio State all shot an 11-over 887 for runner-up honors. Iowa State narrowly won the tournament at 10-over 886.

    The Wildcats now focus on hosting the annual Windy City Collegiate Classic, played at the Glen View Club in Golf, Ill. This year's tournament runs from Monday, Oct. 1-Tuesday, Oct. 2, and the Wildcats are off of competition until hosting their own tournament.
