ATHENS, Ga. – Northwestern played its final 18 holes of the 2012-13 season Friday, completing the fourth round of the 2013 NCAA Championships at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Competing in just the second NCAA Championships in program history, the Wildcats placed 15th in the 24-team field, improving upon their 24th-place finish during the program’s first trip to NCAA’s in 2000.
Freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) led NU in the individual standings, finishing inside the top 25. She carded a 3-over 75 Friday to finish at 6-over 294 (71-72-76-75) and tie for 23rd. Tangkamolprasert came on strong for Northwestern late in the season, leading the squad at the Lady Buckeye, which was the regular-season finale, and at the NCAA East Regional.
First-Team All-Big Ten honoree Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) wrapped up her stellar sophomore campaign at the NCAA Championships. She tied for 68th with a 16-over 304 (73-74-77-80). Freshman Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) was two strokes behind Lee at 18-over 306. Szokol had the low round of the tournament for Northwestern, posting a 2-under 70, during the third round.
Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) played her final collegiate tournament at the 2013 NCAA Championships. She finished two strokes behind Szokol at 20-over 308. Weaver will leave Northwestern as one of the most decorated golfers in program history as she finished first at two tournaments during her NU career and was a two-time All-Big Ten selection.
Freshman Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) rounded out the group of NU competitors at NCAA’s. The 2013 Big Ten Freshman of the Year was two strokes behind Weaver at 22-over 310.
The 24th-ranked Wildcats carded a 49-over 1,201 for the tournament, which ranks second in program history for 72 holes, to finish 15th in the 24-team field. NU placed ahead of a number of highly-ranked teams, including 10th-ranked Florida (17th; +53) and sixth-ranked Vanderbilt (18th; +54). NU finished just a stroke behind fifth-ranked Arkansas and No. 13 Stanford (13th; +48). Top-ranked Southern California ran away with the 2013 NCAA Championships, posting a 19-under 1,133. Runner-up Duke finished at 2-over 1,154 while Purdue placed third at 21-over.
The 2012-13 season was a memorable one for Big Ten Coach of the Year Emily Fletcher and the Wildcats. After winning the first Big Ten title in program history, Northwestern finished sixth at the NCAA East Regional to ensure their second trip to the NCAA Championships in program history. Four of the five NCAA Championship participants return to the squad next year including Tangkamolprasert, Lee, Park and Szokol.
