ATHENS, Ga. – Northwestern played the first round of the 2013 NCAA Championships Tuesday at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga. Freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) continued her stellar play for the Wildcats and led the group of five in the opening round, tying a career low, with a 1-under 71 to tie for sixth in the individual standings.
Beginning on hole No. 1, Tangkamolprasert had a consistent front nine with just one bogey on hole No. 7 and pars the rest of the way. She then gained separation on the back nine, starting with par-birdie-par-birdie and added five more pars to finish the back nine 2-under and 1-under for the first 18. Tangkamolprasert has three rounds under par this season and all three have come in the last four rounds as she also carded two 71’s at the NCAA East Regional.

“It was great today, and it’s very special since it’s my first time here as a freshman at NCAAs," Tangkamolprasert said. "It’s something very big for me, and it felt great to start off today with my teammates and all of their energy out here. It was just very fun today. I think the most important thing today was that I stuck with my plan. There were times out there when I was struggling, but I just kept fighting back and it worked out fine for me.”
Sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) had a round that had no birdies but featured just one blemish on the card as she scored a 1-over 73. The First-Team All-Big Ten honoree had her lone bogey of the day on the third hole and posted pars on the next 15 holes for 17 total pars on the day. Lee is currently tied for 33rd in the individual standings.
Big Ten Freshman of the Year Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) is two strokes behind Lee at 3-over 75. After starting the front nine at 3-over, Park bounced back with two pars and a birdie on holes 10, 11 and 12, respectively, to finish the back nine even. Park sits in a tie for 64th place after the first 18.
Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) scored a 7-over 79 on Tuesday while freshman Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) carded a 10-over 82.
Northwestern, who is playing in its second NCAA Championship in program history, posted a 10-over 298 in the first round and is tied for 12th out of 24 teams. The Wildcats (ranked No. 24 in the latest rankings) are tied with No. 25 Michigan State and No. 9 Arizona and are a stroke ahead of No. 18 Texas, No. 17 UC Davis, No. 10 Florida and No. 6 Vanderbilt who are all tied for 15th at 11-over 299. Fifth-ranked Arkansas is two strokes ahead of Northwestern at 8-over 296 to sits in 11th place. Top-ranked Southern California and No. 48 San Jose State both finished 4-under for the round to lead the 24-team field.
The 72-hole tournament resumes Tuesday morning with second round action beginning at 7:30 a.m. local time. The Wildcats are the final group to tee off tomorrow, along with UC Davis and Arizona, and begin from hole No. 10 at 12:56 a.m. local time (11:56 a.m. CT).
