SUNCADIA, Wash. -- Northwestern began competition at the 2014 NCAA West Regional Thursday at the Tumble Creek Golf Club. After the first 18 holes, sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert leads the group of five Wildcats as she carded a 1-under 71 and is tied for eighth in the individual standings.
The Bangkok, Thailand native had a strong start to the day as she was two under through the front nine with two birdies and seven pars. She had just one bogey on the back nine and added eight more pars for her fifth round of par or better this year.
The rest of the Northwestern contingent was in close proximity to each other as junior Hana Lee shot a 4-over 76 while freshman Kacie Komoto, who is making her first NCAA appearance, was a stroke behind Lee at 5-over 77. Sophomores Kaitlin Park and Elizabeth Szokol scored a 78 and 79, respectively.
As a team, No. 7 seed Northwestern is tied for 10th at 14-over 302 following the first day of competition. The Wildcats are just a stroke behind ninth-place Wisconsin (+13) and two behind Iowa State and UC Davis who are tied for seventh (+12). Top-seed USC leads the 24-team field at 4-under 284. NU will look to move up in the team standings as the top eight at the regional move on to the 2014 NCAA Championships.
The second round of the NCAA West Regional takes place Friday in Washington. The Wildcats will be paired with Michigan State and Iowa State and tee off at 1:50 p.m .CT.
