LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The first round is complete at the NCAA West Regional Championships and Northwestern, which was seeded 17th, is in 15th place.

Teams that finish in the top eight advance to the NCAA National Championships, so the Wildcats are chasing the eighth team, which after 18 holes, is Washington State. The Cougars are nine strokes in front of the 'Cats, who are 23-over (311).

Northwestern was paced by a stellar first round from Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), who is in third place with a 1-under 71. She is two strokes back of BYU's Rachel Newren and California's Sophia Sheridan. Kim finished her first 18 holes with an eagle on the par-5 12th hole, three birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys.

Freshman Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh-Jesuit) is 6-over (78) and tied for 61st place. Northwestern's other three golfers -- Ina Kim (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake), Kelly Robb (Concord, Mass./Middlesex School) and Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) -- all finished 9-over (81) for the day.

Tennessee leads the team field with a two-shot lead over USC.
