FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- Northwestern made a jump in the team standings during the second round of the 2014 Big Ten Championships, moving inside the top three. After ending the first round on fifth place, NU improved six strokes on its day one performance and sits in third at 32-over 608, 10 strokes behind the tournament leaders Michigan State and Ohio State who are tied for first at 22-over 598 heading into Sunday’s third and final round.
Five of the six Wildcats either matched or improved upon their score from Friday with junior Hana Lee still leading the group in a tie for fifth. She had the same score as Friday, a 3-over 75, to sit at 6-over 150 for the tournament. The highlight of the day for her was an eagle on the par-five, 457-yard third hole. Lee is a stroke behind two players who are tied for third and five behind Zoe-Beth Brake and Jessica Porvasnik of Ohio State, who are tied for first after 36 holes at 1-over 145.
A trio of Wildcat sophomores are tied for 16th at 10-over 154. Sophomore Kaitlin Park scored a similar 5-over 77 on Saturday while sophomore Elizabeth Szokol made a sizeable improvement on her first round score with a six-stroke improvement. She had the best round of the tournament for NU so far, carding a 2-over 74 on Saturday to move up from 41st in the individual standings to inside the top 20. Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert also remains inside the top 20 as she scored a 79 on Saturday.
Senior Devon Brown also made a six-stroke improvement on her first-round score, scoring a 3-over 75 on Saturday and moved up to a tie for 32nd. Freshman Kacie Komoto rounded out the NU competitors and improved three strokes from Friday, shooting a 6-over 78 on Saturday to tie for 41st.
One round remains at the 2014 Big Ten Championships as the Wildcats look to move into the top spot on the final day. Last year, NU captured the program’s first Big Ten title and is in prime position to make another move on the final day of competition. Northwestern will tee off at 8 a.m. CT Sunday and be paired with tournament leaders, Ohio State and Michigan State.
