2013 Big Ten Championship First Round Results
FRENCH LICK, Ind. – Northwestern had an impressive first day at the 2013 Big Ten Championships as it leads the 12-team field with two Wildcats occupying the top two spots in the individual standings. In total, four of the six NU competitors sit inside the top-10 after the first 18 holes played at The Donald Ross Course.
No. 29 Northwestern shot a 1-under 287 in the first round and has a six-stroke lead on No. 15 Purdue (5-over 293) who is in second and nine-stroke advantage on third place and No. 49 Penn State (8-over 296). NU’s score of 287 was its third round of the season under 290.
Sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) is the individual leader after the first round, scoring a 4-under 68 on Friday. Beginning on hole No. 1, Lee was 1-under through the back nine and finished strong, carding three-straight birdies on holes 16, 17 and 18 to finish at 4-under. She did not bogey a single hole to post her third round of the season in the 60’s and ninth of par or better.
Lee has a three-stroke lead on NU freshman Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Wilson), who is tied for second at 1-under 71. Park had a team-high seven birdies on the first 18 to card her fifth round of the season under par.
A pair of Wildcats sit in a tie for seventh place after scoring a 2-over 74 Friday. Junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) finished the front nine even with a birdie and a bogey and went 2-over on the back nine while freshman Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) posted two birdies on the front nine to counter four bogeys for the round.
Freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International) is one stroke behind Brown and Szokol as her 3-over 75 ties for 13th. Senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) rounds out the NU group of six and she is inside the top 30, tying for 29th with a 5-over 77.
The Wildcats look to continue their strong play at the 2013 Big Ten Championships as the second round of competition resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. CT.
