NU Result After Round One: 5th/12 teams
FRENCH LICK, Ind. -- A pair of Wildcats are in the top five and there is a tight race at the top of the team standings after the first round of the 2014 Big Ten Championships. Junior Hana Lee and sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert are tied for fifth after the first 18 holes while Northwestern is fifth in the team standings.
The Wildcats are just a stroke behind fourth-place Penn State, two behind third-place Michigan State, five away from Nebraska, who is in second and six strokes behind Ohio State who leads the field. All 12 teams scored in the 300’s on the par-72, 6,017-yard Pete Dye Course with the Wildcats carding a 19-over 307.
Lee and Tangkamolprasert each scored 75’s on Friday. Lee had three birdies on the day while Tangkamolprasert had a very consistent scorecard with 15 pars. Sophomore Kaitlin Park is tied for 17th after scoring a 5-over 77. She was near perfect on the front nine with eight pars and one bogey and pulled even after a birdie on the 10th hole. She then had three-straight pars before a few bogeys to end the round.
Sophomore Elizabeth Szokol is tied for 41st at 8-over 80 and a pair of Wildcats are tied for 44th as senior Devon Brown and freshman Kacie Komoto, who is playing in her first postseason tournament, are a stroke behind Szokol. None of the 72 players in the field had a round under par as Nebraska’s Cassidy Steizmiller leads the field with an even 72.
NU looks to move up in the team standings on Saturday with the second round of the three-day 2014 Big Ten Championships. NU will tee off at 8 a.m. CT with Minnesota and Penn State.
