Big Ten Championships -- Round One Results
GLENCOE, Ill. -- Sophomore Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) carried Northwestern in the opening round of the 30th annual Big Ten Women's Golf Championships and then got some help from her teammates, most notably junior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central), in Friday's second round. The tournament, which is being hosted by Northwestern for a first time, is being held at the esteemed Lake Shore Country Club along the shores of Lake Michigan.
Friday's second round, however, was halted at 6:21 p.m. CT with 16 groups (twosomes) still on the course when a fast-developing severe thunderstorm hit the area. Play is scheduled to resume at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday with the remaining groups starting in shotgun-fashion. At 11:30 a.m., round three will commence with tee times based upon round two results. The last group is scheduled to go off at 1:09 p.m. on Saturday.
Weaver shot a first-round-best 1-under 71 in less-than-ideal weather conditions and then Lederhausen led the 'Cats in the second round with a career-best 4-under 68. Her previous career-best round came last year, a 71 on a pair of occasions. At the time play was suspended, Lederhausen's 4-under 68 marked the best single-round score of the day. Her career round featured five birdies and just one bogey.
Overall, Lederhausen is tied for second place at 1-over (77-68=145) with Purdue's Numa Gulyanamitta. She and Gulyanamitta are both three strokes back of Michigan State's Caroline Powers, who finished the day with a 2-under 142 (72-70). Powers was the individual champion of last weekend's Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus.
Three of the Wildcats' six golfers were unable to finish due to the thunderstorm. NU's Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central), Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline) and Anne Ormson (Granger, Ind./St. Joseph's) will be back on the course at 9 a.m. to finish their suspended round. Lederhausen and Lindenschmidt both have one hole to finish while Ormson has a pair of holes.
Freshman Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) was the third Wildcat to complete the second round as she finished right before the weather suspension. She joined Alex Lederhausen with a career-best round, firing a 2-under 70 in the second round after an 8-over 80 for Friday's first 18. Brown's career-best round included four birdies. She shot a 2-under 34 on the back nine.
When play resumes Saturday, no more than four strokes separate the top six teams. Wisconsin, which has several holes left to play from the second round, is tied with Michigan State at 20-over for the top team spot. Purdue, the three-time defending Big Ten champion and reigning NCAA champ, is in third place at 23-over. Minnesota, Ohio State and Northwestern are tied for fourth place at 24-over, but all three schools have golfers who will finish their second round on Saturday.
