    COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 30 Northwestern played the first 36 holes of the 33rd annual Lady Buckeye Invitational Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. Led by freshman Elizabeth Szokol, who is tied for second in the individual standings, the Wildcats are third in the 12-team field that includes nine Big Ten squads. Szokol had an impressive second round, posting a career-low score of 1-under 71 and has a two-round total of 4-over 148 (77-71).
     
    Just two strokes separate the top three teams as Northwestern is in third place at 31-over 607. After posting a 310 in the first round, the Wildcats improved their score by 13 strokes in the second round, shooting a 297. No. 14 Purdue leads the field, just two strokes in front of NU at 29-over 605 while No. 27 Michigan State is one behind at 30-over 606.
     
    With the 6-count-4 format, which is the same as the 2013 Big Ten Championships, Szokol is one of six Wildcats competing in Columbus and one of four in the top 20. After the first 18 holes, sophomore Hana Lee led the Wildcats in a tie for third, shooting a 3-over 75. Lee began the round on hole No. 5 and finished the back nine out strong with three pars and birdies on 15 and 16.
     
    Szokol has played most of the year as an individual, but was part of the NU team competition this tournament. After the first round, Szokol finished two strokes behind Lee at 5-over 77 and was tied for 10th.
     
    A pair of freshmen, Kaitlin Park and Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, both posted 79’s in the first round to tie for 27th. Senior Lauren Weaver tied for 44th with an 81 while junior Devon Brown finished the first round with an 82.
     
    In the second round Szokol vaulted into a tie for second, shooting a career-low score of 1-under 71, cutting six strokes off her first-round score. The Winnetka, Ill., native began the second round on hole No. 9 and posted three birdies to counter two bogeys and had 13 pars. Szokol is 4-over for the tournament, two strokes behind Laura Gonzalez of Purdue who finished Saturday at 2-over 146.
     
    Lee is tied for eighth after round two, posting a 5-over 78 in the second round and is nine-over through 36 holes (153). Park shaved four strokes off her first-round score and shot a 3-over 75 in the second round to tie for 13th. Tangkamolprasert is close behind Park in a tie for 17th at 11-over 155. She cut three strokes off her first-round total finishing round two at 4-over 76.
     
    Weaver is tied for 22nd after 36 holes and also improved her score in the second round, shooting a 3-over 75. Brown cut four strokes off her first-round score, shooting a 78 in the second round and is tied for 45th.
