ATHENS, Ga. -- Northwestern captured the 3-1 victory over Denver on Sunday during the final day of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Three Wildcat underclassmen recorded victories helping the Wildcats end the tournament on a positive note.

Freshman Kacie Komoto got things started for the Wildcats with the 2-up victory over Isabel Southard. Both players were all square through the first five holes of the round, which began on the 10th hole before Komoto used a par to go 1-up on the 15th and she never looked back, holding a steady lead to wrap up the round and help NU take the 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert gave the Wildcats the 2-0 lead with a 2-and-1 win over Denver’s Jessica Carty. NU went 3-up at the 13th hole but Carty came back to make things all-square on the 18th hole. Both players recorded pars on the first hole but Tangkamolprasert went 1-up with a par on the second hole and maintained her led the rest of the way.

Denver got on the board with a 4-and-3 victory in the next match as Mariell Bruun defeated Hana Lee. Sophomore Kaitlin Park secured the Wildcat victory in the next match, taking the 4-and-2 win over Elyse Smidinger. Denver took the early lead to start the round on the 10th hole, but Park made things all-square on the 11th with a birdie. She then went 1-up on the 12th hole but Smidinger came back to make things all-square on the 17th hole. Park did not give up the lead though, using a birdie on 18 to go 1-up and secured the Northwestern victory.

Sophomore Elizabeth Szokol had the 3-up lead with three holes to play on Denver’s Tonie Daffinrud, but the match was decided at that point.

Northwestern had a strong start to the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic during Friday’s stroke play, setting a new program record for a single-round at 11-under 277 to place first. Junior Hana Lee also matched a program record, carding a 6-under 66 to tie for co-medalist honors.

The Wildcats have one final test before defending their title at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. Northwestern will wrap up the regular season at the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif., from Monday, April 14-Tuesday, April 15.
