ATHENS, Ga. -- Northwestern continued action at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Saturday as the tournament switched to match play. On Friday, the Wildcats placed first in the 16-team field, winning the stroke play portion of the tournament, scoring a program record of 11-under 277. On Saturday, the Wildcats faced two tough opponents in their first taste of match play.
The first match of the day was a close one as No. 26 NC State took the narrow 3-2 victory over the 23rd-ranked Wildcats. Freshman Kacie Komoto took the 4-and-2 victory over Ana Menendez to start the day for the Wildcats. She led for the entire round to give the Wildcats the first point of the match.
The Wolfpack then evened the match as Lindsay McGetrick took the narrow 1-up victory over NU sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert. It was a back-and-forth match with Tangkamolprasert getting out to a 3-up lead through the seventh hole. McGetrick birdied the eighth hole and recorded a par on the 10th hole after the Wildcats recorded a bogey. NU stayed 1-up through the 13th hole but a bogey by Tangkamolprasert and par by McGetrick made things all square. NC State birdied the 15th hole to go 1-up, but Tangkamolprasert pulled even for the 16th and 17th holes. She recorded a par on the par-five 18th hole while McGetrick birdied the final hole to finish 1-up.
Northwestern junior Hana Lee then gave the Wildcats the 2-1 lead after a 3-and-2 victory over Vivian Tsui. Once again, the Wildcats led wire-to-wire in this match as Lee went 4-up on the 14th hole and finished the match off on the 15th hole with the win.
It was another close match between NU sophomore Kaitlin Park and Augusta James as NC State never went ahead by more than 2-up and both players were all square from the 14th-17th holes. Park recorded a par on the final hole while James recorded a birdie to knot the score at 2-2.
It all came down to the final match and NC State’s Brittany Marchand defeated Northwestern sophomore Elizabeth Szokol, 4-and-3 to take the 3-2 victory.
The Wildcats then took on No. 28 Auburn in the second match of the day and the Tigers took the 3-0 victory.
Northwestern will play a third and final match Sunday in Athens.
