EL CAJON, Calif. – No. 29 Northwestern began its spring break competition on a positive note, defeating San Diego State in a dual Thursday. Played at the par-72, 6,039-yard Sycuan Golf Resort in El Cajon, Calif., the Wildcats posted a 3-over 291, outshining San Diego State’s score of 27-over 315.
"The team has worked hard these last five days and are showing good improvement," Northwestern head coach Emily Fletcher said. "We have played some amazing courses this week and have gotten in a lot of short game work, which the team has taken advantage of. Kaitlin (Park) and Hana (Lee) were solid all day on Thursday and Suchaya (Tangkamolprasert) continues her strong play. Lauren (Weaver) has been impressive all week and it's good to have her back playing well."
A pair of California natives finished under par for the Wildcats as freshman Kaitlin Park (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) carded a 2-under 70. Sophomore Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) continued her stellar play this spring, finishing one stroke behind Park at 1-under 71. Both finished first and second, respectively, amongst the 14 participants.
Freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert (Bangkok, Thailand/Bromsgrove International School) and senior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) both posted a 3-over 75 to tie for third. Junior Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) was two strokes behind at 5-over 77 to tie for sixth.
Two other Wildcats competed as individuals with freshman Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finishing eighth at 6-over 78. Sophomore Brittany Mai made her first appearance of the 2012-13 season and the Poway, Calif., native carded an 83.
Emma Henrikson led San Diego State with a 4-over 76 to finish fifth. Complete results can be found in the PDF up above.
The Wildcats continue their spring break trip in San Diego, competing at The SDSU Farms Invitational Sunday, March 31-Tuesday, April 2. The 54-hole tournament will be played at The Farms Golf Club (par-72, 6,202 yards) in Devon Brown’s hometown of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
