MESA, Ariz. – Northwestern sophomore Hana Lee tied a program record Saturday, shooting a 6-under 66 during the first round of the Clover Cup. Her score is a new career low for 18 holes and ties Lauren Weaver’s record for 18 holes, which she set at the 2010 Lady Northern Invitational.
Lee began the first round on hole No. 3 and was 5-under through her first seven holes. She had two pars and two birdies on the back nine before encountering some trouble on hole No. 14 but bounced back with a birdie on 15 and back-to-back pars on 16 and 17. She then closed out the round with a par on hole No. 1 and birdie on No. 2 to finish the first 18 holes at 6-under.
The Hacienda Heights, Calif., native is currently in second place after shooting a 1-over 73 in the second round. She is still well under par after 36 holes at 139 (-5), one stroke behind the tournament leader Jenny Haglund of SMU (71-67=138).
The 16-team field played two rounds Saturday after inclement weather canceled first-round action on Friday. The Wildcats shot an impressive 285 in the first round, which was one stroke off of an NU record, putting them in second place behind Oklahoma (281). After two rounds, Northwestern sits in third, with a two-round total of 588 (+12, 285-303).
Freshman Elizabeth Szokol is competing as an individual in Mesa and is tied for 21st after two rounds with a 5-over 149. After a 4-over 76 in the first round, she improved her score, shooting a career low at 1-over 73 in the second. After beginning the second round on hole 17, Szokol was an impressive 4-under after the ninth hole, scoring five birdies on the front nine.
Three strokes separate three Wildcats as senior Lauren Weaver is tied for 27th at 6-over 150, sophomore Devon Brown is in a tie for 32nd at 7-over 151 and freshman Kaitlin Park is at 8-over 152 in a tie for 34th. Weaver, who is an Arizona native, had the second lowest round of the day for the Wildcats, shooting an even 72 in the first with a birdie and eight pars on the back nine.
Freshman Suchaya Tangkamolprasert rounded out the NU competitors and she is at 10-over 154 in a tie for 47th.
