CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Northwestern made a jump in the team standings Tuesday during the second round of the 2014 Hurricane Invitational. The Wildcats had the best round of the day, and matched the best round of the tournament, with an even 284 to move into second place after opening the event in a tie for fifth.
Played on the par-71, 6,092-yard Biltmore Golf Course, in Coral Gables, Fla., Northwestern sits at 6-over 574 (290-284) through 36 holes, just three strokes behind tournament leader Iowa State (571, +3). The Wildcats have a five-stroke advantage on third-place Miami, who is hosting the tournament.
A pair of Wildcats had scores in the 60’s on Tuesday. Sophomore Kaitlin Park leads the Wildcats after recording a 2-under 69 to tie for sixth at an even 142 while freshman Kacie Komoto also had a 2-under 69. Komoto made a sizable leap in the individual standings as she entered Tuesday tied for 50th and is now inside the top 20 in a tie for 18th at 3-over 145 (76-69). The first-year Wildcat had an impressive scorecard as she was 1-under through the front nine, had five pars on the back nine, a birdie and ended the day with an eagle, on the par-5, 462-yard 18th hole.
Junior Hana Lee remains inside the top 15 as she is 2-over 144 through 36 holes (71-73). Sophomore Elizabeth Szokol recorded her same score from Monday, a 2-over 73, and she is tied for 21st. Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert rounds out the NU starting five and she is 6-over through two rounds to tie for 32nd (73-75).
Senior Devon Brown is competing as an individual for the Wildcats and cut six strokes off her first-round score, carding a 3-over 74 on Tuesday.
The third and final round of the 2014 Hurricane Invitational takes place Wednesday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET.
