NU Result After Round Two: 3rd/15 teams
RIO GRANDE, PR. -- Northwestern made a big move in the team standings Monday during the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Led by a career-low score of 3-under 69 for NU sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert, the Wildcats had the third-lowest round of the day, scoring a 2-over 290 on Monday, an 11-stroke improvement from Sunday.
The Wildcats entered Monday's round ninth in the team standings and made the biggest jump in the 15-team field as they are now in third place at 15-over 591. That is a stroke ahead of fourth-place Georgia (592, +16) and seven strokes behind second-place GRU Augusta (584, +8). Arkansas leads the field at 5-under 571.
All five members of Northwestern’s lineup are in the top 35 individually after 36 holes. Tangkamolprasert had the best round of the day for NU, shaving 10 strokes off of yesterday’s score to post her first career round in the 60’s. She utilized five birdies, including three on the back nine, to counter two bogeys. Tangkamolprasert had a strong finish to the round with three straight pars and back-to-back birdies on holes No. 10 and 11. She is currently tied for 23rd at 4-over 148 (79-69).
Freshman Kacie Komoto also is tied for 23rd after scoring another 2-over 74, the same score she had during Sunday’s round. Sophomore Kaitlin Park and junior Hana Lee are both a stroke behind Tangkamolprasert and Komoto at 5-over 149 to tie for 27th. Park shaved three strokes off of her first round score, finishing Monday at 1-over 73. Beginning on the 11th hole, Park started her day with a birdie then three-straight pars before another birdie on 15. She had eight-straight pars before encountering some trouble on the sixth hole. Park finished the round with three pars and a birdie. Lee cut a stroke off her Sunday score with a 2-over 74 on Monday.
Sophomore Elizabeth Szokol is close to the pack at 6-over 150. She also improved her score from Sunday, carding a 2-over 74 on Monday. Szokol had a steady back nine with all pars and a birdie and two bogeys on the front nine.
Freshman Minjia Luo also competed for NU as an individual and eliminated two strokes from yesterday, carding an 83.
The third and final round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic begins Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. local time.
