NU Result After First Round: 9th/15 teams
RIO GRANDE, PR. -- Northwestern officially opened the 2014 spring campaign Sunday, competing at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Played on the par-72, 6,191-yard Rio Mar Country Club River Course, the Wildcats are one of 15 teams in this year’s field.
Freshman Kacie Komoto led the Wildcats during the first day of competition, carding a 2-over 74 to tie for 18th. She had two birdies, both on the front nine and 12 pars during Sunday’s competition.
Junior Hana Lee was a stroke behind Komoto at 3-over 75 while a pair of sophomores, Kaitlin Park and Elizabeth Szokol finished the first 18 holes at 4-over 76. Sophomore Suchaya Tangkamolprasert posted a 7-over 79 on Sunday.
Freshman Minjia Luo also played as an individual for Northwestern and shot an 85 to open up the tournament.
It’s a close race in the team standings as 13 strokes separate 1st-9th place. NU finished the day at 13-over 301, on the heels of eighth place Tennessee (300, +12) and sixth place Auburn and Georgia (298, +10). Arkansas leads the field at an even 288 while Alabama is in second at 7-over 295.
The second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic tees off with a shotgun start Monday, Feb. 16 at 8 a.m. local time.
