    RIO MAR, P.R. – Northwestern had a strong finish at the 10th Annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic, finishing the third and final round Tuesday with a fifth place finish out of 15 teams. The ’Cats improved their standing each round, finishing 10th after the first round and improved to eighth Monday before closing out the tournament in the top five. Senior Alex Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and freshman Brittany Mai (Poway, Calif.) led the charge for Northwestern as they both finished in the top 20.

    Northwestern also had the best finish out of the five Big Ten schools at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Purdue finished two strokes behind Northwestern to finish sixth, Michigan took 12th while Nebraska and Penn State placed 14th and 15th, respectively.

    Lederhausen improved upon her second round score by three strokes, finishing with a 1-over 73 Tuesday. She tied with LSU’s Tessa Teachman for ninth, shooting a 5-over 221 (72-76-73). Lederhausen began the final round at the fifth hole and birdied on the ninth, 10th and 15th holes.

    Mai had the best finish of her young Northwestern career, tying for 12th with four other competitors. After shooting a 1-under 71 during the second round she had a 2-over 74 in the final round. Mai was two strokes behind Lederhausen with a 7-over 223 (78-71-74).

    Junior Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) made the biggest jump out of the group of five NU competitors as she vaulted from a tie for 50th to finishing 29th. The improvement in the standings was thanks to her scoring a 1-under 71 in the final round. Weaver finished with a 12-over 228 and improved her score in each round (82-75-71).

    Freshman Hana Lee (Hacienda Heights, Calif./Wilson) shot a 7-over 79 during Tuesday’s third round and finished in a tie for 38th. Lee had a three-round score of 15-over 231 (78-74-79). Sophomore Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) rounded out the NU competitors, shooting a 10-over 82 Tuesday to tie for 56th with a 22-over 238 (78-78-82).

    LSU overtook Georgia for first place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, finishing with a 20-over 884 (294-292-298). Georgia finished two strokes behind at 886 and Oklahoma State rounded out the top three teams. Georgia’s Marta Silva Zamora won the individual title with a 3-under 213 (74-66-73).
