    Carpenter Honored as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

    EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior goalkeeper Maddy Carpenter (Wilbraham, Mass./Suffield Academy) has been named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced Tuesday.

    It is the third such honor of her career and her second this season. She previously earned the accolade on Sept. 10.

    Carpenter made four saves in helping Northwestern post a 5-0 home win over Ohio State last Friday. The shutout was Carpenter's seventh of the season, tying her for the Big Ten lead in the category. The win helped NU earn a share of its first conference title since 1994.

    Carpenter ranks first in the Big Ten in both save percentage (.733) and goals-against average (1.04) this season. The latter mark ranks fifth in the country.

    Northwestern (15-4, 5-1 Big Ten) is ranked 13th in this week's Penn Monto/NFHCA coaches poll and is the No. 2 seed for this week's Big Ten tournament which gets underway Thursday in Columbus, Ohio. The Wildcats open play against host and seventh-seeded Ohio State at 11:15 a.m. Central time.
